There is a long-standing tradition for natives of Cabrera Dominican Republic to migrate to the North East of the United States, often times to provide high level services in the hospitality and restaurants industry or other industries requiring cheerful personal service. You may or may not know that there is a very large population of Dominican Republic nationals that live and work in New York, New Jersey and in coastal areas like Nantucket. Obviously the pay-scale is much higher in the northeast U.S. so the migration is to the better paying jobs.
It is interesting though, one of the dreams of many of these native Dominicans, especially whose families are from the north coast region around Cabrera, is to one day return to the quite, peaceful lifestyle you will find in Cabrera. Just like many expats, many native Dominicans in the U.S. find that there is something very alluring to that laid-back tropical lifestyle in the village of Cabrera.
In this video you will meet Rosa. With her husband, Rosa returned from the New Jersey area after living in the U.S. for almost 17 years with a dream to open their own grocery store and restaurant. This venture has proven to be quite a success story, and one that is especially good for the expats coming to the area. At Centro Garcia, Rosa and her growing team are focused on meeting the growing demands of the expat community with the best selection of imported and native groceries, produce, meats and poultry products. As Rosa shares in this video… she intends to make it much easier to find products in Cabrera that just a year ago would have required a trip to the larger cities.
