Independence Day in the Dominican Republic

Yep it's that time of year again.

Yep it’s that time of year again.

It seems that we just said goodbye to our last group of visitors. Just when I thought I’d be able to catch up on a few things another event takes place that the DR Escapes team thought you’d all like to know more about. Yes it’s that time of year again. The time is Independence Day.

Independence Day in the DR still holds deep sentiment with a lot of the locals as their very proud of their history and their heritage and they should be. Below is a brief history of events that allowed Dominican Independence to take place and stay this way ever since.

El Trabucazo

El Trabucazo

The Dominican Independence War gave the Dominican Republic autonomy from Haiti on February 27, 1844. Before the war, the island of Hispaniola had been united under the Haitian government for a period of 22 years when the newly independent nation merged with Haiti in 1822. Due to the Haitian government mismanagement, tax disputes, military violations, and an economic crisis, the Dominican people decided to forcefully overthrow the Haitian government with no compromises.

After winning the war and ousting the Haitian occupying force from the country, Dominican nationalists had to fight against a series of Haitian incursions that served to consolidate their independence (1844-1856). Haitian soldiers would make incessant attacks to try to gain back control of the territory, but these efforts were to no avail as the Dominicans would go on to decisively win every battle.”

Perhaps this is why I’ve mentioned in past posts the following thoughts. The Dominican People stand together. They might look the other way when it comes to political monetary abuses but try and tell a Dominican what he or she can do, grow on their land or how they’re going to raise their family and watch out! You’ve just opened up a can of worms or better yet a can of angry cobras! You’re now sliding down a slippery slope and at the base lies nothing but pointed swords waiting to stop you.

You see the funny thing about momentum is it works equally well in both directions. Both the positive and the negative but similarly in both cases it’s still much easier to control in its early stages before it begins to gather strength… gather momentum if you will.

Same holds true for what you’re currently facing in most western nations and if this analogy sounds somewhat comparable to what you folks in the western nations are battling it should. It would have been much easier to stop this decade’s ago…Before it had time to build up its momentum. Same holds true with this inevitable economic crash. It to would have been much easier of a crash before the Government allowed it to build momentum… or should I correctly say the people allowed it to build its momentum.

Think back about 30 to 50 years. Tell me this wasn’t the same set of rules followed by most western nations. Those rules however basic they are is what once made your nation great. People banding together and staying the course on difficult tests of right verses wrong…at least it once did. So you tell me what happened I’ve been gone over 38 years now?

This time I’d like to hear back from some of you. Share your thoughts and feelings on where did it go wrong. My answer to almost any of your comments will ultimately revert back to the same two reasons.

Don't blame Governments blame yourselves. Once divided the conquering is only a matter of time.

Don’t blame Governments blame yourselves. Once divided the conquering is only a matter of time.

First you allowed yourselves to be divided and second soon after you became conquered. No matter how uncomfortable it feels inside if it were not true then you wouldn’t be contemplating leaving. Bottom line you allowed it to unfold and if you carry that same mentality with you no matter where it happens to be the same thing awaits you and I for one want no part of it. I’m reposting a short YouTube that I did a year prior. I don’t think the subject can be expressed any better than in this short clip. Think about it. If you change the way you look at things the things you look at change.

Larry the tech guy is currently editing a new series of YouTubes that were done at the carnival in La Vega and they should be up in about two weeks. I know you’ll all want to take part in watching them. As for the people, the costumes, the bright colors and all out fun you’ll begin to understand then the locals say “you can’t do it the way we can do it” and they’re so very right. Until next time this is Barry in DR.
